Sometimes our customers share the coolest things with us. This week, one told us about Feerless, a plug-in for your Chrome browser that gives you trigger warnings for Netflix. For those of us living with PTSD, an unexpected trigger on a TV show or movie can completely derail us and the fear of stumbling across such a moment can cause ongoing anxiety. That’s why the woman who developed this plug-in came up with the idea for Feerless.
When you sign up for Feerless, you can customize which catagories you want to receive trigger warnings for. The list includes things like sexual assault, war scenes, eating disorders, self harm, domestic violence, animal abuse, drug abuse, and hate crimes. When you go ahead and watch a movie, if there are any moments in the Feerless database that match the categories you’ve selected, the plug-in will give you a subtle visual cue 15-30 seconds before the offensive material, giving you a choice to look away or keep watching depending on how you are feeling that day. This app is crowd-sourced, so if you come across any triggering moments, you can quickly report it so that the next people to watch will be warned. Folks living with trauma helping other folks living with trauma!
