November 11 – 17 individuals and organizations around the country participate Trans* Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues these communities face. Its a great time to celebrate the accomplishments of trans* people and communities and for allies to educate themselves about trans* issues. Check out this neat visibility timeline for starters (click to enlarge).
Trans* Awareness Week culminates with the Trans* Day of Remembrance, an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of violence. If you are in Chicago, there will be a TDoR community gathering at the Center on Halsted at 6:30 on November 20th. More details are here. If you live somewhere else, you can find an event in your area or gather some friends for your own celebration of the resilience of trans* communities.
