We absolutely adore this endlessly enlightening blog, The Dildographer. Authored by a Ph.D. student writing her dissertation on American sex toy marketing from the late 1800s to the 21st century, The Dildographer is full of juicy sex toy
tidbits and witty insights about the role of sex in American culture.
My favorite posts are the ones that shed new light on the history of sex toys and the language we use to talk about them. In response to Hysteria, the movie we’ve been so excited about, she explains how the story that has circulated about the origins of the vibrator is not fully correct. Most interestingly, she considers the function of this narrative- “It demonstrates our progress from a sexually repressed culture to a sexually free one.”
Equally fascinating is her post about the mysterious etymology of the word “dildo.” I was so relieved to find another woman who has lost sleep wondering where such a word could have come from! If you are in the least bit curious about these things, definitely give this blog a gander, but don’t blame us if your productivity plunges.
