The San Fransisco City Clinic has a website celebrating its 100 years of promoting sexual health. The site includes lots of sexy
and fun polls including Best Porno and Best Reason to Get Checked for an STD (I voted for “enjoy sex”). The best part, however, is the gallery of STD awareness posters. Its very interesting to see how STD prevention strategies changed over time, and the old poster art is beautiful. Some of my favorite ones are the wartime posters aimed at GIs. Many of these engage in a strategy of slut shaming and painting “loose women” as the carrier of disease, endangering good American boys with their secretly syphilis ridden bodies. Ughh. If only those ideas had vanished by now. But at least old-school fear-mongering slut shamers used hot pinup babes in their propaganda, right?
