Bound to Struggle – Where Kink and Radical Politics Meet
Volume 5: PRAXIS
Call for Submissions – Deadline May 1, 2011
PURPOSE: To create a ‘zine that brings together the words and images of a diverse group of practitioners of both kink and radical politics
Here’s some questions to get you thinking-
Does radical politics inform how you do kink? Has kink taught you ways to be a better activist or political thinker? Can the non-physical mechanics of kink (notions of consent, etc.) affect the nitty-gritty mechanics of an action bloc or campaign fight? Do conscientious ideas of environmentalism, anti-sexism, racism, able-ism, classism, gender-ism, etc. figure into the negotiating process of your scenes or relationships? How do you talk about power? Where do these ideas meet action and how do they affect our lives?
WHY “PRAXIS
PRAXIS is a personal philosophy for me, and has a long history in radical struggle. Understood as “practice + theoryâ€, I first learned of the term reading Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. He wrote that praxis is “reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it,†and I am interested in how kink holds the possibilities of reflection, action and transformation on both the personal and political levels.
For this volume, I am looking more specifically for non-fiction (or mixed fiction/non-fiction) writing or comics/art that takes on these issues. While I have been thrilled by the number of radically kinky submissions in the past, I would like to steer this issue a bit away from that form.
YES: personal essays, comics, theoretical works, poetry; serious, funny, sexually explicit, fabulous, unfinished; clearly drawn art due to cheap copy machines
NO: grocery lists of anecdotes, using others’ names without their consent, photos (sorry, I don’t have the equipment necessary to replicate photos)
PLEASE: questions you may not have the answers to, analyses you can’t talk about in class or reading group, thoughts about power and sex that get more complicated the more they are dissected, turning readers on with your brilliance
