I just got word about an interested new documentary called The Price of Pleasure: Pornography, Sexuality and Relationships (www.thepriceofpleasure.com). One of the directors, Dr. Chyng Sun, is, and I’m quoting her bio because it’s more accurate than me trying to describe her, “Media Studies at McGhee Liberal Arts, School of Continuing and Professional Studies at New York University. Her research interests include media literacy; race, gender and sexuality in media; and audience research/media effects.” Cool.
I have not seen the film, but it looks particularly interesting in light of the afore mentioned professor’s article that was published this march in the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly: A Comparison of Male and Female Directors in Popular Pornography: What happens When Women are at the Helm? (published March 2008) — she actually does a quantitative analysis of the different sex acts, acts of aggression, etc. Quantitative! –this lady has watched a helluva lot of porn (or made her interns do it), yet doesn’t sound Dworkin-esque. I’m intrigued.
Check out the website www.thepriceofpleasure.com and Dr. Chyng Sun‘s journal article.
There’s a local showing, Friday, October 10th, 3:30pm, $5, at Doc Films (on UofC’s campus, 1212 E. 59th St.) presented by the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation. The screening begins at 3:30, and is followed by a discussion with the director (there are 2 directors– I don’t know if it’s Dr. Chyng Sun or Miguel Pickler). The screening and Q & A session wraps up at 5:30pm. And, from UofC’s Feminist Student Association: “we will be hosting a discussion after the film at The Pub in Ida B. Noyes. I think it could be a great opportunity to not only process the somewhat challenging material in the film, but also to talk about different reactions to the concepts of feminism and sex work presented in the documentary. Please contact Allison Burque at adburque@uchicago.edu with any questions you might have about the screening.”
